Teaser Tuesday #48 - My Soul To Steal

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week's Tease comes from:

My Soul To Steal
( Soul Screamers #4)

by
Rachel Vincent

First - The Blurb:

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can't just pretend nothing happened. But "complicated" doesn't even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn't just an ordinary girl. She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

Second - The Tease:

In that moment, I just didn't care about the roadblocks thrown up by my brain, my heart and my body were committed to crashing through them. So I set the hard question aside and focused on Nash. On the warmth of his fingers wrapped around mine and his free hand sliding up my arm and over my shoulder to cup the back of my head.

My mouth opened against his, and I welcomed him back, while my body welcomed back the heat he awoke in me, which had lain largely dormant over the past three weeks. But Nash was very careful, his eagerness very controlled. He was hyperaware of my boundaries, and reluctant to even approach them after what had happened the last time.

His caution was both a blessing and a curse. It was like trying to scratch an itch with gloves on.

Third - My Thoughts:

Well, I must say, Rachel sure knows how to keep the story interesting. In My Soul To Steal, Kaylee and Nash's relationship is no longer as rock solid as it was. While Nash is fighting his addiction to Demon Breath, Kaylee is busy trying to decide whether to forgive him or not. And if she can ever trust him again.

Enter Sabine - Nash's ex. Desperate to reunite with Nash after having spent two years apart, Sabine becomes Kaylee's worst nightmare - literally. Do I like Sabine? Only marginally. She is both irritating and infuriating. Do I wish she'd disappear? Not necessarily. She keeps the story entertaining.

And Avari, well, he's still up to his tricks trying to find ways to lure Kaylee into the Nether so that he can claim her soul. Does he succeed? Not wanting to ruin it for those of you who have yet to read this series, I'm keeping silent on this answer.

My rating: 4 out of 5
