Jumble Your Genres Reading Challenge 2014: January: Young Adult - Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins

This year Readers Live A Thousand Lives, Corrie The Book Crazed Girl, and Lovin' Los Libros have teamed up to host the Jumble Your Genres Reading Challenge! For this challenge, the goal is to mix up the genres/categories we read. We have all had those times when we have gotten stuck in the genre/category we are currently reading and read nothing else for a while. The goal here is to mix that up! Each month a different genre/category will be featured and the goal is to read and review one book or more in that genre/category during that month.

For January the genre / category is ~ Young Adult

It was my plan to read Origin by Jennifer L. Armentrout.
But as we all know, things don't always go to plan.

So, my Choice:

Sweet Peril
(The Sweet Trilogy #2)

by
Wendy Higgins

Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

My Thoughts:

I read Sweet Evil last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. So naturally, I had to read Sweet Peril.
Did I enjoy it as much as the first? Most definitely.

Sweet Peril continues several months on from where Sweet Evil left off. Anna has changed somewhat. She is now acting the 'bad' girl and pretending to do her father's bidding (coercing humans to indulge in alcohol and drugs). She's in training, learning how to defend herself and can now wield a knife. Unfortunately though, Anna's also suffering from a broken heart. Kaidan is never far from her thoughts, and even though she knows it's not allowed, she desperately craves a relationship with him. He tries to remain ever elusive. But he too is struggling with his feelings for Anna. There are some pretty intense moments between these two which I really enjoyed.

In Sweet Evil, Anna received a gift, the hilt of a sword (The Sword of Righteousness - the only known weapon  that can take out a demon spirit). Visited by the angel which left it to her, she learns of a prophecy which foretells of 'A Nephilim pure of heart' (supposedly Anna), who will use the sword to 'cast all demons from earth'. In order for her to accomplish this task, she must convince her Neph 'brothers' and 'sisters' to side with her, which she does with the help of Kopano - the son of Wrath.

Wendy has a great writing style and I love her use of the occasional unusual word. 'Discombobulated' - yeah, I had to look that one up. For those of you who don't know, it means confused. Although there are not too many swoon worthy moments, the tension when Anna and Kaidan get together is still intense. I enjoyed reading Sweet Peril and am looking forward to reading the final installment - Sweet Reckoning - due out in April 2014.

My Rating: 4 out of 5
